Every Candidate Is a Potential Customer—Treat Them That Way

Every potential employee

Is also a potential customer

Treat them that way

If you interview people for jobs at your organization, here are a few simple ways to create a great first impression while also testing how well you treat potential employees.

First, make sure the person at the front desk knows you're expecting someone. It may seem inconsequential, but when someone arrives and hears, "Oh yeah, I know he is expecting you. I'll let him know you're here," you immediately set the tone that they matter.

Second, have the front desk offer them a bottle of water. It is a small moment of hospitality, but it goes a long way. I used to test this by asking if they wanted water when I met them. If they said the front desk had already offered, I knew we were doing what we promised.

Third, be on time. Yes, you are in the position of power, but being on time shows real respect.

Even if you decide quickly that someone is not the right candidate, you have still shown hospitality and created a strong first impression.
